Carbon Laser Facial in Makati: What the Black Mask Actually Does
The black mask is the part everyone has seen. A thin layer of medical carbon goes on the skin, sinks into the pores, and the laser then targets the carbon rather than your skin.
That is the whole idea. Carbon absorbs the laser energy, and as each particle heats and shatters it takes oil, dead cells and debris out of the pore with it, while the heat underneath prompts the skin to firm. It reaches oil and texture without the aggression of a peel or the downtime of anything ablative.
It is the same picosecond machine we use for pigment. Pointed at carbon instead of at melanin, it does a different job.
What a session is like
Cleanse, then the carbon lotion goes on thinly and is left to settle into the pores for a few minutes.
The laser passes over the face. It sounds like a series of sharp clicks and feels like flicks of warmth. Sixty minutes for the visit, and the pass itself is a fraction of that.
Skin looks brighter immediately and can be faintly pink for an hour. Sunscreen the next morning is not optional in this climate.
When this is the wrong treatment
Active inflammatory acne
Angry, cystic breakouts need a doctor first. Lasering over them treats the surface and leaves the cause.
Melasma as the main complaint
Heat feeds melasma. There is a separate pico protocol for it and we will move you to that instead of running carbon.
Recent isotretinoin or a fresh sunburn
Both change how skin handles heat. We reschedule rather than push on.
How it actually works
The carbon is the target, not the treatment
Laser light goes where the darkest thing in the field is. Coat the skin in carbon and the carbon becomes that thing, which is what makes the pass even across a whole face rather than concentrated on your darkest freckle.
What that gets you
Cleaner pores, less surface oil, smoother texture and a short-lived brightness that people notice for about a week. Run as a course it holds longer.
Why it suits oily and congested skin in this climate
Humidity keeps oil production high year-round in Manila, and pores refill. A monthly or six-weekly pass keeps ahead of that in a way a one-off facial does not.
Why the picosecond machine matters here too
Shorter pulses put less accumulated heat into the skin. On Fitzpatrick III to V, heat is what triggers post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, so the machine that shatters rather than cooks is the safer one on Filipino skin.

Picosecond systems
PicoSure, PicoWay, Discovery Pico and the Korean and Chinese systems. All can run a carbon pass. What separates them is the pulse duration and how the operator sets it.
Q-switched lasers
Also used for carbon and priced lower. The pulse is nanoseconds rather than picoseconds, so more heat lands per pass. Some machines sold here as picosecond are Q-switched with picosecond marketing, and asking for the machine name is a fair question.
The carbon itself
Medical-grade carbon lotion, applied thinly and evenly. Applied too thick it wastes energy in the layer and never reaches the pore.

Five questions to ask any clinic, including us
Which machine, and is it picosecond or Q-switched?
Both work. The pulse duration changes how much heat lands, which matters more on darker skin. A clinic that cannot name its machine has told you something.
How many sessions before I see a difference in my pores?
The brightness shows the same day. Pore and oil changes need a course, usually four to six sessions spaced three to four weeks apart.
Will this clear my acne?
It helps oil and congestion, which helps some acne. Inflammatory and cystic acne needs a dermatologist and often medication. We will say which one you are in.
What happens to my melasma?
A carbon pass is not a melasma treatment, and heat can make melasma worse. If pigment is the reason you are here, ask for the melasma protocol rather than the carbon one.
