Pore Tightening Treatment in the Philippines: What Works

You powder your nose at 9 am and by lunch the pores on your cheeks show through the makeup again. In a humid city that is the normal state of oily skin, and it explains why so many pore products disappoint.

Pores do not open and close. They have no muscles, so no toner, ice cube or facial can tighten them the way you tighten a drawstring. What changes a pore's size in the mirror is what fills it, how much oil arrives, and how firm the skin around it stays. A pore tightening treatment works on those three things, and each one needs a different approach.

Why your pores look large

Oil and debris stretch them. Oil, dead cells and sunscreen collect inside the pore. The walls stretch around the plug, and a dark tip forms where the contents meet air. A stretched, filled pore looks twice the size of a clean one.

Oil production runs high all year. Manila's heat and humidity keep oil glands busy twelve months a year. You clear the pores on Sunday, and they refill by Thursday.

Skin around the pore loses firmness. Collagen holds each pore's rim in shape. Sun and age thin that support, and the openings sag into a teardrop shape, most visible on the cheeks after 35.

Genes set the starting size. Some faces have larger pores from their teens. Treatment makes them less visible. It cannot give you someone else's skin.

Look closely in daylight. Round pores with dark tips on the nose and forehead point to oil and clogging. Oval, elongated pores on the cheeks with no plug point to lost firmness. Many faces have both.

What makes pores look bigger

Some habits Filipino clients tell us about every week make the problem worse:

• Squeezing and pore strips. Pressure tears the pore wall, and a torn wall stays stretched.
• Hot water and steaming at home. Heat irritates skin, and irritated skin shows larger pores.
• Harsh scrubs. Rough grains inflame the skin around each opening.
• Ice and cold water. Cold tightens the skin surface for a few minutes and changes nothing inside the pore.
• Heavy, oily makeup and sunscreen. If the label does not say non-comedogenic or oil-free, the product can clog pores.

Start at home

The American Academy of Dermatology lists what helps large facial pores look smaller, and most of it costs little:

• cleanse twice a day with lukewarm water
• use products labelled non-comedogenic or oil-free
• use a cleanser with salicylic acid, which unclogs pores
• apply a retinol product at night, unless you are pregnant or breastfeeding
• wear broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher every day, because sun damage weakens the skin around each pore

Give a routine eight weeks before you judge it. If your pores still refill within days, the oil and the plugs need a clinic treatment.

Clogged, oily pores: carbon laser

A carbon laser facial is the strongest pore treatment we offer for oily skin.

We apply a thin layer of medical carbon. It settles into the pores and binds to the oil and dead cells inside. The picosecond laser then targets the carbon, and as each particle shatters it lifts the contents out without any pressure on the pore wall. The laser also warms the deeper layer, and over a course that heat reduces how much oil the glands produce.

What to expect. One session clears the pores you have, and the result lasts two to three weeks. A course of four to six sessions every two weeks brings oil production down. After that, most clients come monthly to hold the result. The laser feels warm with a light snapping, and you can go back to work the same day.

Rough texture around the pores: diamond peel

When dead cells build up on the surface, they sit on the rim of every pore and make the opening look wider and the skin look uneven.

A diamond peel passes a diamond-tipped wand over the skin under gentle suction. The tip abrades the dead layer and the suction lifts the debris away. The peel loosens what blocks the pores, which makes extraction easier, and your makeup sits flatter the next day. It suits skin that feels rough, and it works well between carbon sessions.

Blackheads without squeezing: hydra facial

A hydra facial pulls debris out of the pores with a vortex of water and suction, then pushes serum back in. It feels like a pull, not a scrape, which suits skin that turns red after manual extraction.

Pores plus breakouts: treat the acne first

A full course, followed by monthly maintenance and a good home routine, keeps oil and pore size down for as long as you keep it up.
