Eye bags are four problems that look alike: fluid, a hollow, pigment and fat. Three home checks tell them apart, and each type needs a different fix.
Eye bags are four different problems that look alike in a mirror: fluid that puffs up the lower lid, a hollow that casts a shadow, brown pigment in thin skin, and fat that has pushed forward under the eye. Fluid comes and goes with sleep and salt. The other three stay put. Each type needs its own fix, and a treatment that works on one does nothing for the next, so the first job is to find out which one you have.
The four kinds of eye bags
Fluid puffiness. The skin under your eye sits raised and soft. It looks worst when you wake up and settles through the day. Salt, alcohol, crying and short sleep all swell it. Fluid moves, so this type changes from hour to hour. The guide to puffy eyes covers the causes, from a salty dinner to a night of crying.
A hollow that casts a shadow. Here the skin has sunk instead of bulging. The groove under the eye, called the tear trough, throws a shadow, and you read the shadow as a dark circle. Volume fixes it, and the main option is filler from a doctor, compared with the rest in our guide to eye bag treatments by type.
Pigment in thin skin. Brown colour sits in the skin itself and stays dark in any light. The American Academy of Ophthalmology notes that dark circles are often inherited and more common in darker skin tones, which covers most Filipinos. The guide to dark circles under the eyes separates pigment from the other causes of darkness.
Fat pads pushed forward. A firm bulge that looks the same at 7am and at 6pm and does not care how you slept. With age, the tissue that holds the fat around your eye weakens and the fat shifts forward into the lower lid. It runs in families. Lower eyelid surgery is the fix.
Two more overlap with these. Blood vessels showing through thin skin read blue or purple rather than brown. Crepey skin creases into fine lines when you smile; under-eye wrinkle treatments deal with that layer.
Many faces show two of the four at once, which explains why a single treatment often gives a change you have to search for. The page for eye bag treatment in Makati uses the same four types.
| Type | How it behaves | Torch under the chin | What treats it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fluid puffiness | Worst on waking, better by afternoon | Bulge stays | Sleep, less salt, cold, clinic treatment |
| Hollow shadow | Same all day | Darkness vanishes | Filler from a doctor |
| Pigment in thin skin | Same all day | Darkness stays | Sunscreen, gentle brightening |
| Fat pad | Same at 7am and 6pm | Bulge stays | Lower eyelid surgery |
Three checks you can do at home in a minute
The lighting check. Stand at a mirror and hold your phone torch below your chin, pointing up. Darkness that vanishes was a shadow cast by a hollow. Darkness that stays is pigment or blood vessels.
The morning check. Photograph yourself at 7am and again at 6pm on an ordinary day. Swelling that shrinks by evening is fluid. A bulge identical in both photos is fat.
The stretch check. Pull the skin under your eye sideways with a light touch. Brown colour that spreads and lightens as the skin stretches sits in the skin. Colour that stays concentrated comes from the vessels underneath.
Bring the two photos and your answers to a consultation. They save you from paying for the wrong treatment.
Why Filipino eyes show dark circles early
Genes carry most of the weight. The American Academy of Ophthalmology describes under-eye bags and dark circles as features you can inherit and show in your youth, which then worsen with age, and it names darker skin tones as more prone to dark circles.
Habits add to it. Smoking speeds the loss of collagen and thins the skin under the eye, so the vessels show through. Allergies cause dark circles of their own, and rubbing an itchy eye adds to the darkness. Few people take sunscreen up to the lash line. Sunglasses cover the spot that sunscreen misses.
What fixes each one
Fluid puffiness. Sleep seven to nine hours with your head raised on an extra pillow, cut salt and drinks in the evening, and hold a cool, damp cloth over your eyes for a few minutes in the morning. Our step-by-step plan for getting rid of eye bags puts these in order, and the guide to a cold compress for eye bags covers timing and what to use.
A fat pad. Surgery. In a lower blepharoplasty the surgeon cuts under the lashes or inside the lower lid and removes or repositions the fat. No cream, light or machine moves fat back.
A hollow. Hyaluronic acid filler placed in the tear trough by a doctor with experience in that area. Under-eye filler carries its own risks, and the comparison of eye bag treatments gives the numbers for each.
Pigment. Sunscreen first, then brightening that stays gentle. The skin here is the thinnest on your face, and irritation leaves it darker.
Crepey skin and blood vessels showing through. Treatments that improve skin quality earn their place here.
What to ignore
Eye creams sold as eye bag removers. Doctors at Cleveland Clinic say caffeine or retinol creams can sometimes improve the look of eye bags. None removes a fat pad, fills a hollow or clears inherited pigment. Read the claim on the box against the four types above. The guide to eye creams for eye bags and dark circles matches ingredients to types. Skip hemorrhoid cream: its hydrocortisone thins skin with long use and can darken it.
Tea bags, cucumber and cold spoons. Cleveland Clinic lists them as cold items, and the cold does the work. If your problem is fluid, they help for the morning at no cost. If it is fat or pigment, they change nothing.
Any promise of permanent removal without surgery. Surgery is the permanent answer for fat. You manage the other three.
When eye bags need a doctor
See a doctor before any cosmetic treatment if:
- swelling lasts longer than 24 to 48 hours, the limit Cleveland Clinic gives, or it hurts, itches or turns red;
- swelling around your eyes comes with swelling in your legs. In nephrotic syndrome, a kidney condition, swelling shows around the eyes first and then in the lower legs;
- your eyes look as if they stare or bulge, or you see double. Thyroid eye disease swells the eyelid tissue into something that looks like bags;
- the swelling follows hay fever or a new skin product. Treat the allergy first.
Eye bag treatment at ICONIQUE Peninsula
At ICONIQUE inside The Peninsula Manila, Geralyn Ramos performs EyeLift Pro 360. The session starts with a cleanse, steam and an eye mask, then device work and a hydration booster. The devices are ICONIQUE's own, and a visit takes 45 to 60 minutes including the consultation.
The clinic treats three of the four types without surgery. Fat pads need a surgeon. If you are pregnant, have an eye infection, have had filler under the eye, or carry a pacemaker or another implant, say so at the consultation.
Non-surgical eye bag removal at The Peninsula Manila explains how the consultation sorts the four types. The clinic sits on the hotel's lobby level, where Ayala Avenue meets Makati Avenue, four minutes on foot from Ayala Triangle. See today's price and book before you go.
Frequently Asked Questions
What causes eye bags?
Four things: fluid that collects under the eye, a hollow that casts a shadow, brown pigment in thin skin, and fat that has shifted forward into the lower lid. Many people have two at once, and each needs a different fix.
Can eye bags be removed without surgery?
Three of the four types can improve without surgery. A fat pad cannot. Photograph yourself at 7am and 6pm: a bulge that looks the same in both photos is fat, and a surgeon is the one who changes it.
Are eye bags hereditary?
Often. The American Academy of Ophthalmology describes eye bags and dark circles as traits you can inherit and show in your youth, which then worsen with age. Darker skin tones show dark circles more often.
Do home remedies for eye bags work?
For fluid, yes. A cool, damp cloth for a few minutes, seven to nine hours of sleep, an extra pillow and less salt in the evening all reduce morning puffiness. They do nothing for fat, a hollow or pigment.
When are puffy eyes a sign of something medical?
When swelling lasts longer than 24 to 48 hours, hurts, itches or turns red, or comes with swollen legs, a staring look or double vision. Kidney disease, thyroid eye disease and allergies can all start with swelling around the eyes.
How long does an eye bag treatment take at ICONIQUE Peninsula?
