What happens in a hydra facial, what the studies show, the side effects, how often to go and what it costs in Manila, from a therapist who performs it.
A hydra facial cleans, exfoliates and empties the pores with a vortex of water and suction, then pushes serum into the skin in the same pass. You walk out with no redness to hide, which is why people in Manila book it the week of a wedding, a shoot or a job interview.
The name covers two things. HydraFacial is a trademarked device from one company. Hydradermabrasion is the category, and many machines do the same job under other names. Both can give a good result, and the difference matters when you compare prices. At ICONIQUE we run the ten-step InTENsify hydradermabrasion protocol, and we say that before you ask.
What happens in the hour
Cleanse. A first pass lifts oil, sunscreen and the day's makeup. In a Makati office week that layer runs thicker than you expect, and every step after it works better once it is gone.
Exfoliate. Mild acid solutions loosen dead cells on the surface.
Extract. The suction tip draws out what sits inside the pores. You feel a pull, not a scrape, and no one squeezes your skin.
Infuse. The same tip delivers hydrating and brightening serum while the pores are clear. This step separates a hydra facial from an ordinary clean-up facial.
Light and finish. LED, a protective layer and sunscreen close the session.
The whole appointment takes about sixty minutes. It feels cool, like a suction massage, with no needles and no heat.
What the studies show
The research is small.
In a 2008 study of 20 women aged 34 to 56, six hydradermabrasion sessions spaced seven to ten days apart thickened the outer skin layer and raised antioxidant levels in the skin. Fine lines, pore size and pigmentation decreased, with no complications. A second group had the same serum applied by hand and showed no change at all. The machine delivered what the hands could not.
In a 2022 study of 20 adults with mild to moderate acne, six treatments every two weeks raised the share of clear or almost clear skin from 20% to 65% by investigator grading. The study had no blinding, and one author works for The HydraFacial Company, so treat it as early evidence.
Both studies used a series of six sessions. One hydra facial gives you a clean, hydrated face for about a week. The structural changes came from the course.
Benefits you can expect
Hydration you see the same day. Air-conditioned offices dry skin even in humid weather. Fine lines from dehydration soften by the time you leave. Our guide to anti-aging facials explains how to tell a dehydration line from a collagen line.
Clearer pores without squeezing. Suction empties blackheads without pressure on the pore wall. For oily skin that refills fast, a carbon laser course holds longer; our pore tightening guide compares the two.
Smoother makeup. Foundation sits flat on skin with no dead-cell layer.
Gentle enough for sensitive skin. No heat and no manual extraction, so skin that turns red after a classic facial usually tolerates it.
Side effects
Most people have none worth planning around.
- Pink skin for about an hour. You can go back to work.
- Tightness or mild dryness for a day if you skip moisturiser that night.
- A few small breakouts in the first days on congested skin, as the pores clear.
Three situations call for a different plan. Inflamed, angry acne: suction over red breakouts spreads the inflammation, so an acne treatment in Makati settles the skin first. Melasma as the main complaint: a hydra facial brightens the surface and does not reach melasma. Sunburn or a fresh chemical peel: irritated skin reacts, and we reschedule.
Stop retinoids and strong acids the night before. A clinic that does not ask what you use at home has not read your skin.
Hydra facial or diamond peel
Both remove dead surface cells. A diamond peel abrades them with a diamond tip and suits skin that feels rough and uneven. A hydra facial dissolves and suctions them, adds the serum step, and suits skin that is dehydrated, congested or sensitive. Many clients alternate the two month by month.
How often to get a hydra facial
For maintenance, once every four weeks. Your skin renews its surface on roughly that cycle, and booking more often adds little.
For a specific goal, such as clearing congestion or preparing for a wedding, a course of four to six sessions two weeks apart follows what the studies used. Ask your therapist whether your skin needs a course or monthly upkeep.
Before an event: book two to three days ahead. Skip extraction-heavy facials in the final week.
Hydra facial price in the Philippines
Prices in Metro Manila vary with three things: the device, the number of steps and the serums that go in.
For reference, the largest dermatology chain in the country publishes ₱12,500 for its HydraFacial without extraction and ₱13,500 with it (read from its own listing in September 2026). A much cheaper price usually means a shorter protocol, a different machine or fewer serums.
When you compare clinics, ask:
- Is it the HydraFacial brand device or a hydradermabrasion machine?
- How many minutes is the device on my face, not the whole appointment?
- Which serums go in during the infusion step?
Our current rate for the sixty-minute InTENsify protocol is on the hydra facial in Makati page, along with what each step includes.
Home hydra facial kits
Home devices sold online use weak suction and no professional serum delivery. They can clean the surface, and they carry a risk of broken capillaries if you hold the tip in one place too long. The 2008 study found the serum alone did nothing without the machine, so a kit with a serum and a sponge does not reproduce a clinic session.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a hydra facial?
A clinic facial that cleans, exfoliates and suctions the pores with a vortex of water, then infuses serum in the same pass. HydraFacial is one brand of the device. Hydradermabrasion is the general name for the method.
What are the steps of a hydra facial?
Cleanse, exfoliate with mild acids, extract with suction, infuse serum, then finish with LED and sunscreen. The session takes about sixty minutes.
What are the benefits of a hydra facial?
Same-day hydration, clearer pores without squeezing and smoother makeup. In a 2008 study, six sessions also reduced fine lines, pore size and pigmentation and thickened the outer skin layer.
Does a hydra facial have side effects?
Most people see pink skin for about an hour. Congested skin can break out a little in the first days. Inflamed acne, sunburn and a fresh peel need a different plan.
How much is a hydra facial in the Philippines?
The largest dermatology chain publishes ₱12,500 to ₱13,500 (September 2026). Prices vary with the device, the steps and the serums, so compare what the hour includes.
How often should I get a hydra facial?
Every four weeks for maintenance. For a goal such as clearing congestion, a course of four to six sessions two weeks apart.
Is a hydra facial good for acne?
For blackheads and mild congestion, yes. Red, inflamed breakouts need acne treatment first, because suction spreads inflammation. Cystic acne needs a dermatologist.
Hydra facial or diamond peel: which is better?
A diamond peel suits rough, uneven skin. A hydra facial suits dehydrated, congested or sensitive skin and adds a serum step. Many clients alternate them.
When should I get a hydra facial before an event?
Two to three days before. There is no visible redness the next morning.
Do home hydra facial kits work?
They clean the surface. They lack professional suction and serum delivery, and the 2008 study found serum applied without the machine changed nothing.
