The week by week timeline of a HIFU result, why your face looks the same at two weeks, and how to photograph your own face so the comparison is honest rather than flattering.
Search for HIFU before and after photos and you will find two faces under different lighting, taken at different angles, months apart, with different makeup. Some of those pairs show a real result. You cannot tell which ones from looking.
This is what the change looks like week by week on a real timeline, and how to photograph your own face so that you can judge it instead of guessing.
Week 0, the day of the session
Your face looks slightly tighter walking out. That is heat contracting the collagen you already have, the same way a steak tightens in a pan. Clients see it in the car mirror and get excited.
It fades within a week. Nobody warns people about this, so they conclude the treatment failed on day eight.
You may look pink for one to three hours. The jaw feels tender to the touch for two or three days, the way it does after a long dental appointment.
Weeks 1 to 4, the quiet part
Nothing visible happens. Underneath, your body is repairing the thermal points, and the collagen it lays down is immature and has not organised yet.
This is when most people decide it did not work. It is also when clinics get messages asking for a refund.
There is one thing worth watching in this window: a numb or tingling patch along the jaw is common and settles within two to four weeks.
Weeks 6 to 12, where the result appears
New collagen matures and contracts. The jawline sharpens. The line from ear to chin becomes a line rather than a curve. Cheeks sit slightly higher. The neck is usually the last to change and changes least.
This is the window your before and after belongs to. Full results at eight to twelve weeks is not a hedge, it is when the biology finishes.
Months 6 to 12, the fade
Your own collagen holds the result, so it goes the way collagen goes. Smoking, unprotected sun and fast weight loss speed it up. Most clients book one maintenance session a year.
How to photograph it so the comparison is honest
Clinic photos are taken under controlled lighting for a reason. You can copy most of it with a phone.
- Same light. Daylight, indoors, facing a window. Never a bathroom ceiling light, which throws shadows under the jaw and can manufacture a result on its own.
- Same angle. Front, and both profiles at 45 degrees. Pick a spot on the floor and stand on it.
- No smile. A smile lifts everything you are trying to measure.
- No makeup. Contour is a jawline.
- Same time of day. Faces are puffier in the morning, and salt and sleep move that more than any treatment.
Take the set before your session and again at twelve weeks. Compare the two directly rather than from memory.
What HIFU does not change, whatever the photo shows
It does not remove skin. Pinch under your jaw: if the fold stays where you put it, that is surplus skin, and collagen stimulation does not remove surplus.
It does not add volume. A hollow face needs filling. Tightening a hollow face makes the hollow more obvious.
It does not remove fat under the chin. It tightens the skin over the fat.
It does not work the same on everyone. Thirties and forties with skin that still springs back see the clearest change. Past the point where skin hangs, a surgeon does more in one operation than ultrasound does in five sessions, and we say so at the consultation rather than after.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long after HIFU do you see results?
A slight tightness on the day that fades within a week, then the real change between weeks six and twelve as new collagen matures. Photograph at twelve weeks, not at two.
Why does my face look the same two weeks after HIFU?
Because at two weeks the collagen your body is building has not organised or contracted yet. Weeks one to four look like nothing is happening. This is the normal shape of the recovery, and it is when most people wrongly conclude the session failed.
Are HIFU before and after photos reliable?
Only when lighting, angle, expression and makeup match across the pair. Most photos online fail at least one of those. Take your own under a window, front and both profiles, no smile, no makeup, same time of day.
How many sessions before I see a difference?
Most people get a visible result from one session. A heavier jawline or a neck with loose skin usually needs a second three to six months later, because the second round builds on the collagen base the first one laid.
Does HIFU work on the neck?
Yes, and it is the slowest area to respond and the one that changes least. Neck skin is thin and moves constantly. Expect a firmer look rather than a sharp line.
Will HIFU make me look done?
No. The change is a firmer version of your own face, which is why people report being told they look rested rather than being asked what they had. If you want a dramatic change in one step, ultrasound is the wrong treatment to book.
What can make the result fade faster?
Smoking, sun without sunscreen, and losing weight quickly. All three cost you collagen, and collagen is what is holding the result.
