What to avoid in the first 24 hours, which skincare goes back on the shelf for five days, why sunscreen matters more on morena skin, and the short list of things worth calling us about.
HIFU has no downtime, which people hear as no aftercare. The two are different. You can go back to work the same afternoon and still spend the next fortnight undoing the session without meaning to.
Here is the whole list, in the order it matters.
The first 24 hours
Keep heat off your face. No sauna, no steam room, no hot yoga, no hot shower aimed at the face. Your skin is already carrying controlled heat injury and is working on it. Adding more turns a pink face into a swollen one.
Skip alcohol. It dilates blood vessels and worsens the swelling you already have.
Makeup is fine. Put it on the same day if you want to.
Sleep on your back if you can. Not essential, and it helps with morning puffiness.
Days 1 to 5, the skincare shelf
Put the actives away. No retinol, no AHA or BHA, no vitamin C at strength, no scrubs, no cleansing brush.
Wash with something plain, moisturise, wear sunscreen. That is the routine for five days.
Every one of those actives works by irritating the skin. Your skin is already handling an injury it did not choose, and adding a second one does not double the result, it doubles the inflammation. On skin with more melanin in it, inflammation is how you get brown marks.
Two weeks of sun discipline
SPF 50 every morning, reapplied if you are outdoors. Indoors near a window counts, because UVA passes through glass.
This is the item people skip and the one that costs the most. Inflamed skin plus UV plus melanin produces post inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and on Filipina skin that takes months of brightening to fade. The tightening still worked. You cannot see it under the pigment.
Two weeks before any other treatment
No facial, no peel, no laser, no microneedling, no threads for two weeks. Not because the treatments conflict, but because your skin is already in a repair cycle and a second procedure on top of it raises the risk without improving the result.
Tell any other clinic you visit that you had focused ultrasound, and when.
What is normal and what is not
Normal. Redness for one to three hours. Tenderness to the touch for two or three days. Mild swelling. A tingling or numb patch along the jaw, which can last two to four weeks. Small bruises where the handpiece crossed bone.
Call us. Blistering. A burn mark. Swelling that gets worse after day three rather than better. A numb patch that has not started improving after four weeks. Any asymmetry in your smile.
The last one is rare and matters. Focused ultrasound near a facial nerve branch can cause temporary weakness, and it resolves, and we want to know on the day rather than at the next appointment.
What helps, and what does nothing
Helps. Water, sleep, sunscreen, leaving your face alone.
Does nothing measurable. Massaging the area, cooling masks after the first day, collagen drinks, and the supplement someone will recommend to you. Your body makes the collagen from the injury. Nothing you swallow tells it to make more at that specific point.
When to book the next one
Review at three months with photographs taken the same way. If the lift is what you wanted, come back in a year. If the jawline needed more, a second session at three to six months works on the collagen base the first one laid.
We do not sell packages on day one for this reason.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I avoid after HIFU?
For 24 hours: sauna, steam, hot yoga, hot showers on the face, and alcohol. For three to five days: retinol, AHA, BHA, strong vitamin C and scrubs. For two weeks: any other facial, peel, laser or microneedling, and sun without SPF 50.
Can I wear makeup after HIFU?
Yes, on the same day.
How long does swelling last after HIFU?
Redness for one to three hours and mild swelling with tenderness for two or three days. Swelling that increases after day three is worth a call.
Is numbness after HIFU normal?
A tingling or numb patch along the jaw is common when the energy passes near a nerve, and it settles within two to four weeks. If it has not started improving by week four, tell us.
Can I exercise after HIFU?
Walk the same day. Leave hot yoga, sauna and anything that raises your face temperature for 24 hours. Ordinary gym work the next day is fine.
When can I have a facial after HIFU?
Two weeks. Your skin is in a repair cycle and a second procedure on top of it adds risk without adding result.
Do I need to take anything for pain?
Most people need nothing. Paracetamol covers the tenderness if you are sensitive. Skip ibuprofen and aspirin for the first day if you bruise easily.
Does drinking water or collagen supplements improve the result?
Water and sleep help you heal. Collagen drinks have no way of directing collagen to the specific points that were treated, and no clinic should charge you for one as part of the aftercare.
