The benefits of a hydra facial, the step behind each and how long it lasted in studies: 72 hours, two weeks, four weeks. Plus five things it does not do.
The benefits of a hydra facial are fewer blackheads, a smoother and brighter surface, and skin that looks plumper and less dry, all visible the day you have it. Each benefit keeps its own clock. In the studies below, the softer look of fine lines had faded by 72 hours, dryness and radiance held for those 72 hours, the smoother surface was still there at two weeks, and blackhead counts stayed below their starting level for four weeks. On brown skin, a gentle setting avoids the redness that can turn into a dark mark.
One handpiece does three jobs. Fluid runs from the tip onto your skin and suction pulls it back in, so the liquid swirls in a small vortex under the tip and lifts off loose dead cells along with the day's oil. The same suction draws out what sits in the pore openings. Then the tip feeds serum into the skin while the dead layer is at its thinnest. None of the studies below reports Filipino participants. Researchers ran three of them in Korea, and two enrolled skin types up to V on the Fitzpatrick scale, which takes in brown skin.
Hydra facial benefits and how long each lasts
| Benefit | The step behind it | How long it lasts |
|---|---|---|
| Fewer blackheads and whiteheads | Extraction under suction, after exfoliation loosens the plugs | Counts still down at four weeks |
| Smaller-looking pores | Extraction | Smaller at one week |
| Less shine | Cleanse and extraction | Hours; heat brings the oil back sooner |
| Smoother surface | The vortex cleanse | Still smoother at two weeks |
| Softer fine lines | Serum and water swelling the top cells | Faded by 72 hours |
| Less dryness, more radiance | Serum infusion | Still better at 72 hours |
Fewer blackheads, for about four weeks
Blackheads and whiteheads are plugs of sebum and shed cells sitting in the mouth of a pore, open to the air or closed over. A hydra facial loosens the plug with its exfoliating step, and the suction lifts it out with no fingers pressing on the pore wall.
In a split-face trial of 23 women in Seoul, all with acne-prone skin, one side of each face had a single session of a 4% glycolic and lactic acid solution run under suction, and the other side had the same solution with no suction. On the suction side, whiteheads and blackheads fell and stayed below their starting count at one, two and four weeks. The acid-only side trended down without reaching significance.
A gentle session did less. In a 2024 imaging study of eight volunteers, the mild setting left clogged pores unchanged on camera analysis at two weeks. If blackheads bring you in, ask what loosens the plugs before the suction runs, and how many passes the therapist makes over your nose.
Heat speeds the refill. In a Korean study of 20 women on a July day, 90 minutes outdoors raised the oil on their faces. In Makati, the matte finish from a session lasts until your first long walk outside, and the plugs take weeks to build up again.
A smoother surface, still there at two weeks
The fluid and suction strip away the driest, loosest cells at the top of the dead layer, the ones that make a cheek feel like fine sandpaper. In the 2024 imaging study, the dead layer thinned from 9.42 to 6.67 micrometres, about 29% less, and the count of ridges on the surface fell from 7.12 to 5.75. All eight volunteers felt the difference under their fingertips.
At the last scan, two weeks later, new cells had rebuilt the dead layer to 9.75 micrometres, a shade thicker than before, and the surface had kept most of its new smoothness at 5.87 ridges. A hydra facial at The Peninsula Manila puts this cleanse and exfoliation in the same visit as the extraction. If rough texture bothers you more than blackheads, weigh the two options in diamond peel vs hydra facial.
Plumper, less dry skin for about three days
In a 2008 study, 20 women in two groups had six visits each. In one group a hydradermabrasion device delivered an antioxidant serum, and antioxidant levels in their skin rose. The other group received the same serum by hand, and nothing changed.
The plumped look you see in the mirror comes from water. Serum and fluid swell the cells at the surface, and fine lines soften while those cells stay swollen; the authors of a 2023 study gave that explanation for what they saw. Their participants had one session with a diamond-tipped device that exfoliates, extracts and infuses serum in one pass. Right after it, dryness, roughness, radiance and fine lines all scored better. At 72 hours, the researchers could no longer show a significant change in fine lines, while dryness, roughness and radiance were still better.
The participants used the device maker's skincare at home daily, and all four authors work for the company behind the device. The authors contrast their result with a 2009 split-face study of 28 patients that used a diamond tip with no serum: hydration rose right after treatment and was back at baseline the next day.
Your cheeks dry out indoors and out. The authors of a 2016 review found that low humidity, the kind an office air conditioner produces, weakens the skin barrier and makes skin quicker to react to irritants. In the July study, cheeks lost water during the 90 minutes outdoors as sweat evaporated, even as oil on the face rose. Oily skin still needs the serum step.
The glow on morena skin, and the risk of dark marks
Part of the glow after a hydra facial is blood. Ten minutes after the session in the 2024 imaging study, the small vessels under the surface measured 28.5 micrometres on average, up from 13.5 before. The researchers also saw inflammatory cells on the same scans: a few after a gentle session, more after a stronger one.
On brown skin, inflammation can leave pigment behind. The authors of a 2026 review of these marks describe them as more pronounced in skin of colour and able to last months to years, with ultraviolet light and local inflammation among the triggers.
Your therapist controls how much inflammation you get. In the 2024 study, the researchers set suction strength and the number of passes for each volunteer. Gentle sessions left no visible redness. Stronger ones bought fewer red areas and fine lines at two weeks, at the price of redness, and by the authors' account bruising, lasting up to five days. None of the eight, skin types II to V, reported dark marks or breakouts. On morena skin the gentle end is the better trade: you give up part of the fine-line change and keep redness off skin that can turn it brown.
The inflammation was gone by the two-week scan. Until then, wear sunscreen each morning, because ultraviolet light is the other trigger.
Five limits of a hydra facial
Whiten your skin tone. The brightness comes from a smoother surface and extra blood flow. Melanin, the pigment that sets your skin tone, comes from cells in the deepest row of the epidermis, and the fluid and suction work in the dead layer on top. Dark spots move on a longer timeline: in the 2023 study they began to fade at week four, after two sessions and a month of the study's skincare at home.
Shrink pores for good. In the Seoul trial, the one-week check was the only point where pore area came out smaller.
Keep shine away through a humid afternoon. A session clears the oil already on your face. Your oil glands sit in the dermis, below the suction, and heat pushes their output up.
Build collagen in one visit. Two weeks after a single session, the researchers in the imaging study saw no change in the amount or quality of collagen, including after the stronger settings. Structural change took a course of six sessions in the 2008 study, which our guide to hydra facials in the Philippines walks through.
Clear melasma or fill acne scars. Melasma needs a plan of its own, laid out in our melasma guide. A pitted scar is a dent in the skin, and fluid and suction moving across a dent leave its floor where it was. Our acne scar guide covers the treatments that reach it.
Keeping the benefits longer
Book around the benefit you want most. Blackhead counts were still down at four weeks in the Seoul trial, so a session about every four weeks keeps pace with them. Moisturise at night, since the 2023 authors credit their home routine with part of the 72-hour result.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the benefits of a hydra facial?
Fewer blackheads and whiteheads, a smoother and brighter surface, and skin that looks plumper and less dry. In the studies behind this article, blackhead counts stayed down for four weeks, the smoother surface held at two weeks, and dryness and radiance held at 72 hours.
How long do hydra facial results last?
Each result keeps its own timeline. The softer look of fine lines had faded by 72 hours in a 2023 study, while dryness and radiance were still better at that point. In a 2024 study the surface was still smoother at two weeks, and in a 2015 trial blackhead counts were still down at four weeks. Collagen looked unchanged two weeks after one session.
Is a hydra facial good for oily skin?
For clogged pores, yes. In a split-face trial, one session of acid under suction cut whiteheads and blackheads, and the counts stayed down at one, two and four weeks. The matte finish lasts hours: in a Korean study, 90 minutes outdoors on a summer day raised the oil on the face.
Which facial is better, hydra or whitening?
Pick by the goal. A hydra facial makes skin look brighter by clearing dead cells and bringing blood to the surface. It works in the dead layer, above the cells that make melanin, and leaves your base skin tone as it was. In the 2023 study, dark spots began to fade from week four, after two sessions and a month of daily skincare at home.
Is a hydra facial safe for morena skin?
The 2024 imaging study included skin types II to V, and none of its eight volunteers reported dark marks or breakouts. Gentle sessions left no visible redness, and stronger ones left redness for two to five days. Brown skin shows more pronounced dark marks after inflammation, so choose a gentle session and wear sunscreen for two weeks afterwards.
Does one hydra facial build collagen?
Not in the 2024 imaging study: collagen looked the same two weeks after one session, even after stronger settings. A 2008 study reported structural change after six sessions spaced seven to ten days apart.
