Why underarms darken, why scrubbing makes it worse, and which treatments move it. From a therapist in Makati, including when to see a doctor instead.
Dark underarms are one of the most common things people ask us about and one of the least discussed out loud. Clients lower their voice for this question in a way they do not for acne or wrinkles.
So before anything else: it is not a hygiene problem. Underarms darken on people who shower twice a day in this climate. The causes are mechanical and chemical, and once you know which one is yours, the fix stops being guesswork.
Why underarms go dark
Skin responds to irritation by making pigment. That is the whole mechanism. Anything that irritates the underarm repeatedly leaves a mark, and Filipino skin produces melanin readily, which is protective in the sun and inconvenient here.
Shaving. The blade scrapes the surface and the follicle is left inflamed. Shave twice a week for years and the skin does not finish calming down between episodes. Plucking is worse for the follicle.
Friction. Tight sleeves, gym straps, bag straps, and skin against skin in humidity. Constant rubbing on thin skin does the same thing a razor does, slower.
Deodorant and depilatory cream. Alcohol, fragrance and hair removal chemicals sit on skin that has almost no barrier compared to the face. Some people react without connecting the product to the colour.
Old inflammation. Ingrown hairs, boils, folliculitis and heat rash all heal by leaving pigment.
Weight and hormones. Insulin resistance changes how skin behaves in the folds of the body. That one is different from the rest and it is covered at the end, because it needs a doctor rather than a clinic.
The mistake most people make first
Scrubbing.
The move is intuitive: the skin looks dirty, so you clean it harder. Loofahs, salt scrubs, lemon, baking soda, whitening soaps used daily.
Friction is one of the causes. Scrubbing adds friction, the skin inflames again, and it answers with more pigment. People arrive after a year of this convinced nothing works on them, when what they have been doing is feeding the mechanism.
Lemon and calamansi deserve their own line. Citrus on skin that then meets sunlight can cause a burn reaction and leave darker marks than you started with. It is a folk remedy that backfires.
What does move it
Stop the cause first. No treatment holds while a razor runs over the area twice a week. Switch to a single-blade razor with the grain, or move to laser hair removal, or leave it. Change the deodorant to something without alcohol or fragrance for a month and see what happens. Loosen the sleeves. This part is free and it decides whether anything else lasts.
Gentle chemical exfoliation. Not scrubs. Acids lift the pigmented surface layer without friction, and used at the right strength on a schedule rather than daily, they clear what has already been deposited.
Brightening actives. Ingredients that slow melanin production so the skin stops refilling the colour while the surface clears. This is the half that keeps working between appointments.
Laser, when the pigment sits deeper. Surface work reaches surface pigment. A picosecond laser shatters deeper pigment mechanically with less heat than older lasers, which matters on morena skin because heat is what triggers the darkening we are trying to remove.
In clinic those run as a course. Most clients see a change after three sessions. The realistic picture is a few tones lighter and more even, not the colour of your inner arm, and anyone promising that is selling something.
How long it takes
Skin that darkened over ten years does not clear in a month.
Three sessions to see the direction. Six to reach most of what is available. Then maintenance, because the causes do not disappear: you still shave, you still sweat, you still wear sleeves.
The clients who keep their result are the ones who changed the razor and the deodorant. The clients who come back at the same shade a year later are the ones who did the course and changed nothing else. We can tell you which group you are in after the second session.
What we do not promise
We do not make your underarms the same colour as your face. Different skin, different thickness, different history.
We do not fix it in one session before a wedding this weekend. If the wedding is this weekend, the honest answer is a good deodorant and a sleeve, and we will tell you that instead of taking the booking.
We do not treat this while the skin is broken. Active ingrown hairs, boils or raw shaved skin get settled first, because working on inflamed skin adds pigment rather than removing it.
When it is not a beauty problem
Read this part even if you skip the rest.
If the darkness is velvety to the touch, thickened rather than only discoloured, and it also appears on the back of the neck, in the groin, or under the breasts, that pattern has a name. Acanthosis nigricans is a skin sign linked to insulin resistance, and sometimes to thyroid or hormonal conditions.
No amount of exfoliation, laser or brightening cream treats it, because the skin is responding to something happening in the body. It improves when the underlying condition is managed, and it belongs with a doctor.
We check for it at the consultation. Telling someone to see a physician costs us a course of treatments and it is the correct answer, so that is what happens.
Where we do it
Underarm whitening is performed at ICONIQUE inside The Peninsula Manila, on the corner of Ayala and Makati Avenues. The door is on the lobby level, beside the staircase.
The consultation is free and it starts with what you use and what you do, not with a price list. Bring the name of your deodorant.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why are my underarms dark even though I wash them every day?
Darkening is not a hygiene problem. Skin makes pigment in response to irritation, and shaving, friction from tight sleeves, deodorant and old ingrown hairs all irritate it. Washing more does not reach the cause.
Does scrubbing help lighten underarms?
No, and it usually makes it worse. Friction is one of the causes, so scrubs, loofahs and daily whitening soaps add the irritation that produces the pigment.
Can lemon or calamansi whiten underarms?
Avoid it. Citrus on skin followed by sun exposure can cause a burn reaction that leaves the area darker than before.
How many sessions does underarm whitening take?
Most clients see a change after three and reach most of the available improvement by six. Skin that darkened over years does not clear in a month.
Will my underarms match the rest of my skin?
No. The realistic result is several tones lighter and more even. Underarm skin is thinner and has a different history from the skin on your arm.
Does underarm whitening hurt?
The exfoliation and brightening steps do not. Laser feels like a quick snap and the session is short.
Can I shave after treatment?
Not for a few days, and afterwards a single blade with the grain rather than against it. If shaving is what darkened the area, changing how you remove hair matters more than any product.
Does laser hair removal lighten underarms too?
Often, indirectly. Removing the reason to shave removes one of the main sources of irritation, so the pigment stops being refilled.
Why do my underarms get darker again after treatment?
Because the causes continue. Shaving, friction and deodorant do not stop when the course ends, which is why maintenance and a change of habit are part of the plan rather than an upsell.
When should I see a doctor instead?
If the skin is thickened and velvety rather than only dark, and the same appears on the back of your neck, groin or under the breasts. That pattern can signal insulin resistance and needs a physician, not a clinic.
