Diamond peel, chemical peel or power peel: how deep each one goes, the downtime in days, and which carries less risk of dark marks on Filipino skin.
A diamond peel takes off the dead outer layer of skin with a diamond-coated tip and gentle suction. It uses no acid and no heat, and your skin does not peel afterwards. A chemical peel uses acid. Depending on the acid and its strength, it loosens that same dead layer or wounds the skin down into the dermis, with one day to three weeks of redness, flaking and healing after it. On Filipino skin the diamond peel's advantage is a lower risk of the dark marks that follow irritation. A chemical peel reaches pigment and oil that a diamond tip cannot, and on brown skin it belongs with a dermatologist experienced in peeling darker skin. The "power peel" on Manila menus sits on the diamond peel's side of that line: a mechanical exfoliation with no acid, done with crystals or a diamond tip.
Three things a Manila menu calls a peel
In Manila, "peel" is a menu word. One national dermatology chain lists eight treatments under it: five acid peels, one crystal microdermabrasion, one jet of air and water, and one hybrid of abrasion and acid. Ask what will touch your skin before you compare prices.
Diamond peel. A mechanical treatment: a diamond-coated tip buffs away dead skin while suction lifts the debris. Our diamond peel guide covers what it changes over a course.
Power peel. This one is mechanical too. One national chain's Powerpeel blows corundum crystals, the aluminium oxide used on sandpaper, across the skin and vacuums them back through the same handpiece: crystal microdermabrasion, from ₱3,500 a session (checked 24 September 2026). Another chain sells a diamond-tipped body treatment as a "Diamond Power Peel", so ask whether crystals or a diamond tip will touch your face.
Chemical peel. A practitioner applies an acid and times it. The acid dissolves the bonds that hold dead cells together, and at higher strengths it injures living layers on purpose so the skin rebuilds them.
A hydra facial borrows from both, with wet abrasion and a mild acid step; see our diamond peel vs HydraFacial comparison.
Depth, layer by layer
Diamond peel and power peel: the dead layer. A dermatology review of microdermabrasion places "all of the action" at the stratum corneum, the sheet of dead, flattened cells on top (Savardekar, 2007). In a 2024 imaging study of eight volunteers, one diamond-tip session left that layer thinner and flatter. The abrasion stops above the living cells that make pigment.
Superficial chemical peels: the epidermis. DermNet lists glycolic acid, salicylic acid and Jessner's solution as the superficial agents. Glycolic acid is the smallest alpha hydroxy acid. It loosens the glue between dead cells, and the practitioner neutralises it to stop it. Salicylic acid, a beta hydroxy acid, dissolves in oil, so it works inside pores and suits oily, acne-prone skin. Jessner's solution combines resorcinol, salicylic acid and lactic acid. A superficial peel can work down through the living epidermis toward the cells that make pigment.
Medium chemical peels: the upper dermis. TCA, trichloroacetic acid, at 20 to 35 percent is the most common medium-depth peel (DermNet). It coagulates the proteins in the skin and turns the surface white, which practitioners call frosting. On its way down it passes the layer where pigment is made.
Deep chemical peels: further into the dermis. Phenol is the deep-peel agent. DermNet notes that doctors choose lighter peels for darker skin because of the pigment risk, and a deep injury can leave pale patches that stay.
Downtime, in days
| Healing | What you see | |
|---|---|---|
| Diamond peel | None | Faint pink for a few hours, a day at most, no peeling |
| Power peel | Not stated | "Mild redness and micropeeling", per the chain that sells it |
| Light chemical peel | 1 to 7 days | Redness, then scaling for 3 to 7 days |
| Medium chemical peel | 7 to 14 days | Swelling that worsens for 48 hours, blisters, crusting |
| Deep chemical peel | 14 to 21 days | Bandages over the treated area |
The chemical peel figures come from the American Academy of Dermatology, which adds that light peels may take three to five sessions, two to five weeks apart. A course of light peels can mean several weeks of flaking at the office.
The dark marks that follow irritation
Doctors call them post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The cells that make pigment, the melanocytes, sit at the base of the epidermis. Inflammation above them makes them produce more melanin, and a brown mark forms. If an injury damages that base layer, pigment falls into the dermis, where the body's clean-up cells trap it (DermNet). DermNet adds that these marks are more common in darker skin, where they come out more intense and last longer.
Depth decides your exposure. A diamond peel works above the melanocytes, a superficial chemical peel works down toward them, and a medium peel passes through them. The American Academy of Dermatology warns that people with skin of color "can develop permanent pigment problems" when the dermatologist doing the peel lacks expertise with darker skin tones.
A chemical peel on brown skin can go well, and a 1999 study shows what that takes. The dermatologist running it gave 25 patients with skin types V and VI two weeks of 4 percent hydroquinone cream, then five salicylic acid peels at 20 and 30 percent, two weeks apart. Twenty-two of the 25 showed moderate to significant improvement, and four had minimal to mild side effects. From the first day of cream to the fifth peel, that is ten weeks under a dermatologist's care.
A diamond peel needs none of that preparation, though it still needs a light hand: the same microdermabrasion review warns that treatment "too deep or intense can cause permanent discoloration". On a morena face, anything that leaves skin raw raises the odds, from a scrub the night after to an afternoon in the sun. Our guide to diamond peel side effects covers the days after.
Acne marks, pigment and texture
Brown acne marks. These are pigment, and the ones in the epidermis fade over months. A diamond peel removes the dead layer on top and leaves your skin taking a brightening product better for a week or two, though it will not clear deep pigment. A superficial salicylic or glycolic peel with a lightening cream, run by a dermatologist, works further into the pigment. Marks unchanged after a year belong with a pico laser.
Pitted scars. A diamond peel will not fill acne scars, and neither will a superficial chemical peel. The chemical option for ice pick scars is TCA CROSS: a dermatologist presses high-strength TCA into each scar so it rebuilds from the base. Rolling and boxcar scars need collagen work, and our acne scar guide matches each type to what reaches it.
Melasma. A diamond peel will not clear it. Dermatologists sometimes use superficial peels on melasma alongside creams, and melasma darkens after irritation, which makes every peel on it a judgement call. The Peninsula runs a pico melasma treatment, and our melasma guide covers what works on Filipino skin.
Rough texture and oily skin. A diamond peel leaves skin smoother the same day, with no flaking. A light chemical peel gets there once the scaling stops, up to a week later. For oily skin with clogged pores, salicylic acid has the edge.
Power peel or diamond peel
A crystal power peel and a diamond peel both work on the dead layer without acid. Three differences separate them.
Loose crystals. A crystal machine sprays particles that can reach the eyes, nose and ears, so the Savardekar review calls for a mask and protective eyewear. A diamond tip leaves nothing loose, and the review reports that patients find the crystal-free version less painful.
Hygiene. The chain that sells the Powerpeel calls it "more hygienic than the diamond peel, as the crystals used are disposed of immediately." If a clinic reuses its diamond tips, ask how it cleans them between clients. The question applies to us too.
Risk on brown skin. The rule is the same for both: risk rises with pressure and with the number of passes, whichever abrasive does the work.
Choosing
Start with a diamond peel if your skin tans fast and holds marks for months, if this is your first professional exfoliation, or if you have an event within the week. Book a diamond peel in Makati and keep the chemical peel conversation for later, with a dermatologist.
See a dermatologist about a superficial chemical peel for oily, congested skin without inflamed breakouts, or for brown marks that have lingered for months, if you can commit to the preparation and to daily sun protection.
Book neither with red, inflamed breakouts: they need acne management first.
Plan both across a year by keeping at least two weeks between a diamond peel and any other resurfacing treatment. Leave any session that combines abrasion and acid to a doctor, because acid penetrates faster through skin buffed that day.
At The Peninsula Manila
ICONIQUE performs a diamond peel at The Peninsula Manila in the hotel lobby, where Ayala Avenue meets Makati Avenue, a four-minute walk from Ayala Triangle. The session runs sixty minutes. The price is ₱5,900. Book your sessions about four weeks apart, the time your skin takes to renew.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a diamond peel a chemical peel?
No. A diamond peel is mechanical: a diamond-coated tip and gentle suction remove the dead outer layer. It uses no acid and no heat, and your skin does not peel afterwards.
Is a diamond peel or a chemical peel better for morena skin?
For a first treatment, sensitive skin or an event within the week, the diamond peel: no downtime and a lower risk of the dark marks that follow irritation. A chemical peel reaches further into pigment and oil, heals in 1 to 7 days for a light peel and 7 to 14 for a medium one, and on brown skin it belongs with a dermatologist experienced with darker skin.
Is a power peel a chemical peel?
No. At the Manila chain that sells a Powerpeel, it is crystal microdermabrasion: corundum crystals blown across the skin and vacuumed back. It works on the same dead layer as a diamond peel, with "mild redness and micropeeling" afterwards, from ₱3,500 a session (checked 24 September 2026).
Does a chemical peel have more downtime than a diamond peel?
Yes. The American Academy of Dermatology gives 1 to 7 days of healing for a light peel, 7 to 14 for a medium peel and 14 to 21 for a deep one. A diamond peel needs none: faint pink for a few hours, a day at most, and no peeling.
Does a chemical peel work better than a diamond peel on acne marks?
On brown marks, a superficial salicylic or glycolic peel with a lightening cream, run by a dermatologist, works further into the pigment. A diamond peel smooths the surface and helps a brightening product absorb for a week or two. Neither one fills pitted scars.
Can I have a diamond peel and a chemical peel in the same month?
Yes, with at least two weeks between them. A session that combines abrasion and acid needs a doctor's design, because acid penetrates faster through skin buffed that day.
