What a diamond peel changes after one session and after four a month apart, what never changes, and how to take before and after photos you can trust.
After one diamond peel, the change you can see sits on the surface. Skin looks smoother and less dull the same day, and makeup sits flatter for a week or two. Pigment and scars look the way they did that morning. After four sessions a month apart, skin looks less rough overall and brown marks from old breakouts look lighter than they would have on their own. Pore size, pitted scars, melasma and your natural shade stay where they were, however many sessions you book.
The diamond-coated tip of the wand polishes off the outermost dead cells while a gentle vacuum lifts them away, so each change you can photograph happens in that one layer. Your skin renews it in about four weeks, so four weeks is the unit for judging a result. If the treatment is new to you, read how it works first.
One session and four, side by side

| Blackheads | Tops levelled, then the pores refill | The same pattern after each session |
| Brown marks from old breakouts | No visible change | Lighter than they would be on their own |
| Shine | Less for about an hour | No change in oil output |

The same day
You walk out of a sixty-minute diamond peel in Makati with skin that feels smooth under your fingers. For the rest of that day your face looks better than the result it will keep. In a Korean study that treated one side of 28 faces, skin hydration and redness rose on the treated side as soon as the diamond peel ended and were back at their starting levels the next day. Any serum at the end adds shine on top.
Oil keeps a shorter clock. Surface oil drops at the end of the treatment and returns within about an hour, so the matte T-zone you see in the treatment room is gone by the time you are back at your desk.
A photo taken minutes after the session records flush and serum. Keep it for yourself and leave it out of the comparison.
The first week
For the first two days some skin feels tight or dry, and a plain moisturiser settles it. In the same Korean study the water barrier had closed by day two. Despite the name, a diamond peel leaves no visible peeling, since it works without acid or heat.
Days three to seven are the fair window for a one-session photo. The flush and the serum shine have gone, and the smoother surface is still there. Makeup sits flatter and serum spreads in a thin film, a benefit that holds for a week or two. On brown skin the first change you notice in the mirror is the grey, ashy cast lifting from the cheeks.
Brown marks and scars look the same in this window, and you should not expect one session to move them.
One month later
By about week four your skin has renewed the top layer the session smoothed. Expect a day-28 photo to look close to your before photo, because one session's smoothness lasts about as long as the layer it treated. Pores refill at the pace your oil glands set, and they refill faster in hot weather. The next session falls due here, about four weeks after the last.
After four sessions, a month apart
Sessions on day 0, 28, 56 and 84 make four, a month apart. Take the comparison photo on day 112, the morning of the fifth session, before anything touches your face. That photo shows what held between sessions, while a photo from the best week would show a peak.
Two changes can show by then.
Texture.A 2001 study followed 14 people through a series of microdermabrasion sessions lasting 12 to 14 weeks. By the end they judged their own skin smoother and its pigment more even, and their wrinkles unchanged.
Brown marks from old breakouts. A brown mark is pigment held in the epidermis, the part of your skin that renews itself from below. Each session takes off the top cells, and they carry pigment out with them. Untreated, brown marks can last months or years, according to a 2010 review of pigment problems in darker skin, and four sessions a month apart, with sunscreen every morning, shorten that wait. Spend a weekend at the beach in the middle of the course and the marks can darken again, because ultraviolet light drives the pigment.
Blackheads repeat the one-session pattern after each visit: tops levelled for a while, then refilled, because the oil glands feeding them sit deeper than the tip reaches.
Four things no number of sessions changes
Melasma. Its pigment lies deeper than a diamond tip reaches, and rubbing or irritating the patch can darken it. Melasma needs its own treatment, and The Peninsula runs a separate pico melasma treatment for it.
Blue-grey marks. That colour means pigment in the dermis, below the reach of a diamond tip.
Pitted acne scars. A pit is tissue lost under the surface, and polishing the top does not fill it. Each type of acne scar calls for a different treatment.
Pore size and your natural shade. The oil glands and the pigment cells sit below the dead layer and keep working as they did before the course. You can read the mechanism behind each limit in the benefits of a diamond peel, one by one.
Taking before and after photos you can trust
A phone gives you a fair comparison if you hold the conditions steady.
- Light. Face a window in daylight, at the same hour each time. Ceiling light throws shadows that shift with each tilt of your head.
- A second shot in side light. Turn so the window lights one side of your face. Front light flattens texture, so a front-lit pair hides the problem and the change alike. Side light shows ridges and dents, which makes it the honest shot for texture and scars.
- Camera. Use the same phone and lens at the same distance, with beauty mode and filters switched off. Some phones smooth faces on the front camera by default. Prop the phone on a shelf at a marked spot instead of holding it at arm's length.
- Bare skin. Wash your face and wait ten minutes for towel redness to settle. Skip makeup and every product, sunscreen included, because each one changes how skin reflects light.
- Timing. Take the before photo on the morning of your first session, the one-session photo on day three to seven, and the course photo on the morning of session five.
Keep the rest of your routine steady. A new serum in the middle of the course makes it impossible to tell which one changed your skin, and a tan from a weekend away shifts your shade more than any facial. Compare the two photos side by side on one screen at the same zoom, not from memory.
The same test works on clinic photos. Ask when the clinic took the after photo and under what light. A diamond peel facial before and after may show a session that also included extraction and a mask, so ask what the session included too. A pair shot minutes apart in a treatment room records flush and serum, and a pair shot under two different lights records the change in lighting.
Reading your result
If texture holds and brown marks have lightened by day 112, keep going with sessions about four weeks apart. If the concern you photographed has not moved, name it before you book more. Melasma and scars need other treatments, and more diamond peels will not change that.
Geralyn Ramos performs the diamond peel at ICONIQUE on the lobby level of The Peninsula Manila, where Ayala Avenue meets Makati Avenue, eight to eleven minutes' walk from Greenbelt and Glorietta. A session takes sixty minutes and costs ₱5,900. Book a diamond peel at The Peninsula Manila and take your before photo on the morning of the session.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you see results after one diamond peel?
Yes, on the surface. Skin feels smoother the same day and takes makeup and serum better for a week or two. Brown marks, melasma, scars and pore size look the same after one session.
When should I take my diamond peel after photo?
Three to seven days after the session, once the pink and the serum shine have gone. For a course of four sessions four weeks apart, take it on day 112, the morning of the fifth session.
How many diamond peel sessions before I see a difference?
Texture changes after one. Brown marks from old breakouts need a course: judge them after four sessions about four weeks apart. Untreated, those marks can last months or years.
Why does my skin look the same a month after a diamond peel?
About four weeks is how long your skin takes to renew its top layer, and one session's smoothness lasts about as long as that layer does. Sessions run about four weeks apart for that reason.
Will a diamond peel change melasma or acne scars?
No. Melasma pigment lies below the reach of the tip and can darken with irritation, and a pitted scar is missing tissue that polishing does not replace. Neither changes after one session or after four.
Does your skin peel after a diamond peel?
No. A diamond peel buffs the surface without acid or heat, and you should not see peeling. Skin can look pink on the day and feel tight or dry for a day or two while the barrier recovers.
